Free! Exploratory Testing Training Workshop on 17 May 2011

Introduction

Exploratory testing is the most effective and efficient means of testing software, but until now there have been few opportunities to learn how to do it in a planned, structured manner.

Test Partners are the only outsource testing company in the UK that specialises in exploratory testing, and in this one-day hands-on workshop you will learn the techniques we have developed over more than ten years and 900+ projects.

We would like to thank Tony Bruce for inviting us to present this workshop, which is one of many you can attend free on 16 and 17 May 2011. See http://skillsmatter.com/event/agile-testing/london-tester-gathering-2011.

This workshop starts with the basics of exploratory testing, but even experienced testers will learn new techniques. The course is highly practical, and provides an approach that you can apply to your projects immediately. These building blocks can be used in conjunction with session-based test management on larger projects.

You should attend if:

  • You want to test more efficiently.
  • You want to find bugs that scripted tests will never find.
  • You want to use your skill, not follow a process.
  • You don't have fully documented requirements.
  • You never want to write another script or use a test case management tool again.
  • You want to learn how exploratory testing can be planned, structured and provide traceability (all the things its critics say it doesn't do!).

Duration: 1 day.

Date: Tuesday, 17 May 2011 at 9:30am (GMT).

Who Should Attend? Software testers and developers with all levels of skill and experience.

Cost: Free!

Location: The Skills Matter eXchange, 116-120 Goswell Road, City of London EC1V 7DP

You need to bring: A wi-fi enabled laptop (Windows XP or later), with a minimum of Microsoft Word and Excel 2003 and .Net Framework 3.5. The applications we are using will not run on Mac OS X or Linux!

You will receive: A memory stick containing all the applications and documents we use during the workshop.

You will learn how to:

  • Use our 8-layer testing model as a framework for testing.
  • Find oracles and trace requirements.
  • Plan and track your test coverage whilst exploring.
  • Test with incomplete specifications (or none at all!).
  • Minimise test documentation.
  • Create inventories to drive the test planning.
  • Create 'site map' pages to facilitate rapid navigation.
  • Use some lightweight test tools to improve efficiency.

The workshop focuses on system testing or UAT of web-based applications, but the principles can be adapted to any technology or stage of development.

This short duration of this workshop means that it will not be possible to include more advanced techniques such as session-based test management and automation. These will be covered in further workshops in the future.
