Compatibility Testing and Interoperability Testing

Most organisations do not have the resources to fully subject an application or website to compatibility testing with the myriad of different environments it may be expected to operate in, or undertake interoperability testing with the range of applications it may have to co-exist with or indeed with which it may interface.

In the case of a new in-house application, whilst the task may be quantifiable as the end-user environment is known and can be controlled, the number of possible combinations still means a great deal of work which may not be either the most cost effective or efficient use of internal resources.

The compatibility testing requirements of a web based application or site could require substantially more testing; after all, having spent a considerable amount of money and effort designing the 'experience' you wish users to have, it would be wasted if a number of users either couldn't experience the site as designed or in the worst cases were unable to access the site and do business with you. It is vital that the site is tested across different Operating Systems and Browsers to ensure that it behaves as expected. As the number of variables increases, such as the use of Flash, and other multimedia 'plug-ins', the types of security required e.g. SSL and different levels of encryption, the task just grows and grows.
