Yet Another Upgrade for 'Jaguar' Version of Mac OS X

(20 December 2002)

Apple Computer have kept up their astonishing record of releasing an upgrade for Mac OS X almost every month since its launch. Version 10.2.3 is the fourth version of 10.2 (known as Jaguar) which was launched in August 2002 and the 15th (yes, fifteenth) version of OS X in little over 18 months.

To complicate matters, many of the applications and utilities for OS X will only run on certain versions or later (10.1, 10.1.3, 10.1.5 and 10.2 involved significant technology steps). Users report problems when performing consecutive upgrades in order to stay current, with several applications breaking when this is done.

Note - version 10.2.4 released during last week of February 2003.

Netscape 7 Released

(02 October 2002)

Netscape have announced the launch of their version 7 browser. Six incremental upgrades were made to Netscape 6 since its launch in 2001, but Netscape 7 is seen as a major step forward. Both browsers claim to be 'standards-compliant' but the 'real-world' performance of Netscape 6 was poor, largely due to a decision not to make it backward compatible with previous versions and the withdrawal of support for proprietary extensions.

Version 7 will need to address this if it is to increase market share which has been falling for several years. Initial reviews suggest that whilst some features such as Instant Messaging are much improved, the performance of the browser itself is not greatly improved.

Note - version 7.01 released during second week of December 2002.

Further note - version 7.02 released during last week of February 2003.
