User Testing
We conduct user testing with disabled people and their assistive technologies to assess the accessibility of websites and software applications.
Why Test With Real Users?
Technical testing for compliance with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) is important but it only indicates how accessible your website should be, not how accessible it actually is.
To determine the actual accessibility of a website it is necessary to test it with a range of users with different disabilities and assistive technologies.
Furthermore, technical testing assesses the accessibility of each page in isolation, but in practice most website use is based around tasks that span multiple pages. We therefore identify the most important tasks and user journeys on your website and use those as the basis for the user testing.
This approach is explained in more detail at Scenario Based User Testing
User Groups
Different user groups encounter different accessibility issues so ideally testing should be conducted with a variety of users from the following groups (this is not an exhaustive list).
Visual and Hearing Impairments
- Screen reader users
- Screen magnifier users
- Braille device users
- Deaf users
Mobility Impairments
- Keyboard-only navigation
- Voice recognition software users
- Mouse and keyboard replacements e.g switches, head pointers
Cognitive Issues
- Dyslexics
- Users with learning difficulties
- Users for whom the website is not in their first language
